What the data can and can't tell you
Owner care matters
MOT failures aren't just about the car - they're also about how well it's been looked after. A well-maintained Ford might pass every test, while a neglected BMW might fail repeatedly. One car's history doesn't tell you everything about the model.
This is the reality of MOT data. We won't pretend otherwise.
Scale changes everything
When you analyse 289 million inspections across 97,106 models, patterns emerge that individual cars can't show you.
See how every model performs against every other. If a model consistently ranks bottom, that's the model, not the owners.
A car's first test is at 3 years old - before owner neglect kicks in. If it's already failing, that's a design issue.
When thousands of the same model fail for the same reason, that's not coincidence - it's a weak spot.
If 2016 models fail more than 2018s, the manufacturer fixed something. BIB shows you which year to target.
This is intelligence that's never been available to ordinary car buyers before. Not perfect - but powerful.
Why some cars have gaps - and what we do about it
We do our very best to surface complete, accurate data for every car. But the government dataset has real-world imperfections outside our control.
MOT testers enter data manually. Spelling mistakes, typos, and inconsistent make/model labelling - especially on older or less common cars - create noise that's hard to fully clean.
The further back you go, the less consistent the data. Early-2000s make and model fields were often entered freehand, producing hundreds of variations for the same car.
A car's first MOT is due at three years old. Any vehicle younger has no record - not because something is wrong, but because the law doesn't require one yet.
The DVLA strips variant letters from model names. Tesla Model 3, S, X, and Y all arrive as TESLA / MODEL - a very high test count, but not a BIB error.
What BIB does: We normalise make and model names, cross-reference registrations where possible, and are upfront when data is thin. If we can't give you a confident picture, we'll say so rather than guess.
